A saying in Yoruba goes thus “A Butterfly tries to compare itself to a Bird can never function like a Bird”… This is true in all sense because a butterfly can never fly on the same altitude with a Bird. Also it can never fly for the same period as a Bird.
The same is applicable to the Church (when I say the Church, I am referring to Christians) and this has been true from Church History. The World has always tried to imitate the Church. However, this above scenario is true in our generation.
We are in a time when the church has lost its identity, we no longer know who we are, who we represent, our calling, our hope and our future. The adage that says “a river that forgets it’s source will eventually dry up” is very true in our case. The church has forgotten it’s source – Jesus.
The question now is; Where did we lose it? The answer is not far fetched, the moment we made the world the light of the church contrary to what Jesus told us in Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden”.
The world no longer looks up to the Church to get things done but we look up to the world in all things now. Let us examine a few;
1. Dressing: This cannot be overemphasised. Today, we look up to world “celebrities” to determine what we should wear. It is easy to find someone who calls himself/herself a Christian dressing and exposing sensitive parts such as the cleavages, laps, sagging and so on.
2. Music: Check an average Christian’s phone, you can be sure to find 80% of the songs are from the world celebrities. The church no longer find spiritual songs from gospel singers edifying again.
It’s so easy to dance for long hours to the songs of Kayne West, Naeto C, Beyonce which doesn’t edifies the spirit of man. This is in contrary to Ephesians 5:19 “speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord,”.
3. Relationship: Are you surprised at this? Christians today relegate the Word of God and commit sin at will. You find people who are not married staying together and sleeping with each other.
Christians now see nothing wrong with man sleeping with animals, man having sexual relations with a man and a woman having sexual relations with a woman. Christians even encourage it when the Bible totally condemns it. See Leviticus 18.
1 Corinthians 6:9-11 “Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”
In conclusion, we must understand that God can never be mocked. What a man sows, that is what he will reap. Let us endeavour to be the light Jesus desires us to be in the world so that many will come to Jesus.
I call you Jedidiah – God’s Beloved.
